"If I could turn back time and you ask whether I would come to this club, I would say never."

But he has not yet received the offer he craves, adding: "If somebody doesn't come in then I have no choice but to run it. A lot of people have called me, but they are just fishing. I don't see the money."

Managerial vacancies are dominating the news, with Blackburn Rovers now said to be down to a shortlist of three names to take over from Paul Lambert.

Rovers director Mike Cheston is quoted in the Lancashire Telegraph as saying: “We’ve moved on from the long list to the shortlist. I wouldn’t say it’s final, as anything can happen at any stage with these things, but yes, we’ve definitely whittled it down to a few, and good progress has been made in the last week or so.

“We’ve used the little bit of time we’ve had, and it’s important to invest a little bit of time into this, rather than just going straight in, and it’s definitely proved worthwhile so far.

“But we’re also conscious we need to get the new manager in place as soon as possible as we need to address player contracts and the recruitment of players in time for pre-season."
