It's fifty years since Steve Smith became Huddersfield Town’s first-ever substitute.

The homegrown teenager wore the No12 shirt in the 2-1 second-tier home win over Preston North End on September 18, 1965.

The Football League had allowed substitutes from the start of the season – but only to replace injured players.

The first was Charlton Athletic’s Keith Peacock, who replaced injured keeper Mike Rose at Bolton Wanderers on the opening day, August 21.

Smith, who was to become a long-serving Town player, then manager, went on for centre-half John Coddington.

It was the seventh of his 381 appearances for the club, 13 of which were from the bench.

Smith also appeared as a substitute (for Denis Atkins) in the following game at Charlton, which was won 2-0.

Town, managed by Tom Johnston, used the new rule in eight of their 42 league games in 1965-66.

From 1966-67 onwards, substitutes were also allowed for tactical reasons.

Two changes per match were allowed from 1987-88 and three from 1995-96.
