AFC EMLEY’S FA Cup hopes ended at the first hurdle as they lost 3-1 at Formby in the extra preliminary round.

Things started brightly for Ian Banks’ side, who took a sixth-minute lead through Andy Farrell, who shot home after good work by Stephen Kenworthy.

But the hosts, from the North West Counties League, levelled after quarter of an hour and went ahead in the 23rd minute.

AFC’s chances of forcing a replay were hit by red cards for Banks’ son Oliver (second yellow on 75 minutes) and Matt Neesam (dangerous play on 85).

Formby added a third goal with four minutes remaining.

AFC aim to bounce back in tomorrow’s Northern Counties East League Cup first-round clash with Grimsby Borough (7.45), their first home match of the season.

Liversedge’s cup campaign also ended early, with a 4-1 loss at Pickering Town.

Bay Athletic begin the defence of their West Riding County Amateur League title with a trip to Wakefield side Hall Green United tomorrow.

There’s a derby between last season’s second and third-placed sides, Storthes Hall and Meltham.

Golcar host Lower Hopton while Kirkburton, last season’s Division I champions, make their top-flight debut at Hemsworth.

Marsden, who were also promoted, host Brighouse Town.

All six Huddersfield clubs are now playing in the Premier Division.
