David Wagner hailed Huddersfield Town’s battling 1-1 draw at Aston Villa as an even better achievement than Saturday’s 2-1 win at Newcastle United.

Michael Hefele stepped off the bench to mark his Championship debut with an unorthodox 87th-minute equalise r.

It reflected a stirring second-half show in front of 34,924, including around 2,400 Town fans, who saw Villa boss the first half and lead through Ross McCormack.

“In four days we have had two special moments,” said head coach Wagner, whose side are third in the table

“For me personally, this was more exciting than Newcastle and maybe more important as well.

“To confirm your performance after playing well the previous game is difficult.”

Wagner said Town’s first-half performance was a letdown.

“We were poor and missed nearly everything we are normally able to bring onto the pitch,” he added.

“I have massive respect for the lads – in the second half they did everything right that they had done wrong in the first half.

“We totally deserved this point, because the players were brave and aggressive and we trusted in ourselves.”
