Could Tommy Smith be a future Huddersfield Town captain?

The right-back is certainly making an impression on head coach David Wagner.

Manchester City product Smith was among the squad the German boss inherited a year ago.

The 24-year-od has been a regular on the teamsheet.

Wagner handed him a new contract at the start of this season.

And in the absence of captain Mark Hudson his deputy Dean Whitehead and from the starting XI against Birmingham City, Smith was made skipper.

That was despite the presence of midfielder Jonathan Hogg, who has stood in as Town captain in the past, and Christopher Schindler, Michael Hefele and Chris Lowe, who all wore the armband at their previous clubs in Germany.

Wagner explained: “Huddy is still our captain - but we have a strong dressing room with a lot of leaders.

“At the moment I like to have British players wearing the armband.

“I have seen the steps Tommy has made in the right direction in both the dressing room as well as on the grass.

“He was my choice against Birmingham and he deserved this.”
