David Wagner has a lot of sporting interests, but don’t talk to him about rugby or cricket!

The 44-year-old German head coach has made a big impact at Huddersfield Town, and he draws on other sports for inspiration.

For holidays, the Wagners either go skiing or chase the sun in the Canary Islands – “for the last seven or eight years we’ve been choosing the sun and going to Fuerteventura in the winter break,” he says – but sport is very much a part of their lives.

“I had a big interest in hockey in Germany, because it’s the same size pitch and 11 v 11, so there are lots of very similar ideas in the game to football,” he explained.

“I like boxing and also basketball and American Football, but not so much rugby and cricket.

“They are something new for me, but I will have to learn because every time I turn on the TV it’s always rugby or cricket!

“My interest is to look over the plate (from the outside) and to learn from the different ideas they have in their approach and their coaching.”
