Huddersfield Town chalked up a clean sheet against Werder Bremen but were unable to find the net as the two sides played out a stalemate in Austria.

Loan goalkeeper Danny Ward looked confident on his debut but had little to do as Town’s defence held the Bundesliga side at bay admirably throughout.

Kyle Dempsey, Philip Billing and Harry Bunn were withdrawn with knocks in what was an intense encounter with the German outfit, and Wagner will hope all three are ready to return imminently with the Championship kick off under two weeks away.

After joining up with his new teammates at the weekend , Ward made his debut between the posts at the first opportunity, but Nahki Wells and Kasey Palmer were again absent through injury.

Ivan Paurevic recovered from illness in time to take his place among the starting line-up, while record signing Christopher Schindler was partnered alongside skipper Mark Hudson in the centre of defence.

There was a good pace to the opening 45 minutes but few decent chances for either side – Elias Kachunga and sub Jack Payne both fired wide, but neither side had an effort on target before the break.

No player completed 90 minutes with ten half time changes that stunted the flow of the game, but sub goalkeeper Luke Coddington was ready to make a point blank save eight minutes after the restart from a set piece.

Jonathan Hogg dragged a shot off target before Werder Bremen should have taken the lead midway through the second period. Coddington was able to stop the initial effort but watched on helplessly as the man following up missed an open goal.

Payne again showed flashes of quality but Town struggled in the final third against a strong, well-drilled opponent.

However, the clean sheet will please the manager as he continues to build towards competitive football on August 6.
