Leicester City boss Claude Puel has a number of defensive issues to sort out ahead of the visit of Huddersfield Town this weekend.

The Foxes face the Terriers at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, but will be without captain Wes Morgan after the Jamaica international was sent off against AFC Bournemouth last time out.

The French manager has since backed his skipper, stating that Morgan had "started the season well with good games, good intensity and good strength".

The loss of the 2015/16 Premier League-winning captain will be a blow for the Foxes, especially as Puel also has concerns over tiredness in his squad.

These relate to England defender Harry Maguire in particular, whose 2018 World Cup campaign with the Three Lions significantly shortened his time for rest and recuperation in the summer.

When asked if the work load is taking its toll on the centre back, the manager told LeicestershireLive : “Yes. It is a reflection of mine about this.

"It is my responsibility to try to find a good balance about this. Not just a good balance about the different attributes of each player but the balance their tiredness, their desire and their freshness.

“Perhaps some players did not have enough freshness and concentration because they were little tired with their travels.

“It is not an excuse but I think we lacked some concentration, focus, desire and the mentality, but the positive attitude was always present here.

“It is my responsibility to look perhaps at different players if they are tired but the player wants to play all the time of course. I need to have a good mind and think about this. This is my responsibility.”

Leicester are able to call on new signing Caglar Soyuncu or summer addition Jonny Evans to fill in for the defender, but the Turkey international struggled against Chelsea Under 23s on Sunday and the former West Bromwich Albion defender has been working his way back from a pre-season injury.

Puel revealed that he may well have to use one of his yet untested signings however.

“We have a solution of course,” added Puel.

“We have good players with Jonny Evans and with Soyuncu, and we will see with calm next week.

“It will be an opportunity for the players to show their quality and I am not afraid about this.

“My concern is just this game will be an accident for the future. That is my last thought because we deserved other things from the beginning of the season.

“It is a shame but we have responsibility, I am responsible, and together we will correct this.”
