LEE CLARK reviewed one of the most frustrating days of his three years as Huddersfield Town manager and admitted: “I don’t really know where to start with that display.”
His side were defeated by Harry Arter’s 19th-minute goal, and the boss pulled no punches as he accepted that a second successive loss, after a Football League record run of 43 games unbeaten, could have been by a greater margin.
“We were awful from start to finish and there wasn’t one aspect of our performance which was acceptable,” was Clark’s damning analysis.
The match was watched by 11,676 (216 away fans), and the manager added: “We have let the supporters down for sure. They didn’t get value for money.
We’ve had one shot on target (by Jordan Rhodes in the 64th minute) and that’s not good enough.
“Against Charlton (where Town lost 2-0 12 days previously) we gave it a real go, especially in the second half.
“What was so frustrating in this game is that we went down with a bit of a whimper.
“We were lucky to be just the one goal behind at half-time and throughout, there was no energy, no tempo, no intensity. It just wasn’t a Huddersfield Town performance.
“We didn’t pass the ball at all well, but it’s difficult to pass when there are no options.
“I said to the players at half-time, what’s the worst that can happen?
“If you try to do something right, have a shot or a try a cross, you might over-hit it or hit the defender, but it’s better doing that than being negative going sideways, missing passes because of too much fear and tension.
“With six or seven minutes to go we were still messing around with the ball at the back. Why not put it into the danger zone and see if we can nick a scrappy goal?”
Clark praised Bournemouth after a first win over Town in 20 attempts stretched their unbeaten league run to six and lifted them two places to 14th in the table.
“They did what I wanted us to do, They passed the ball, were composed and created chances,” he said.
“I just don’t know why we couldn’t have done that.”
