NAT BROWN and Nathan Clarke today went head-to-head in a bid to replace suspended Efe Sodje in the Town starting line-up.

The duo were playing in a practice match at Chesterfield knowing a place against Bristol City on Saturday is up for grabs.

Team captain Sodje - who has been fined a week's wages by manager Peter Jackson for his sending-off against Barnsley - starts a three-match suspension at Ashton Gate.

"Nathan and Nat are in contention to replace Efe, so it's going to be a big opportunity for one of them," said Jackson today.

"I've always said that if people do well when they get a chance, they will keep hold of the shirt.

"Efe is now out for three matches, so there's a chance for Nathan or Nat to step in and impress.

"While Nathan started a handful of games before being hit by a flu bug, he has still to regain the top form he was showing last season.

"Nat can play just about anywhere and is well capable of playing at the heart of defence, so I'll be keen to see how he goes on in this practice match and take things from there."

Chris Brandon missed yesterday's tough training session because of a stomach bug but is not considered a doubt for Saturday's trip.

Tony Carss is now back in training having had stitches removed from his left knee - he underwent cartilage surgery a fortnight ago - while Jackson also has Welsh Under 21 cap Lee Fowler back in action down at Saltergate today, when Junior Mendes, Akpo Sodje and John McAliskey form the attack.

"All the lads worked very hard in training yesterday when we did a lot of running in addition to our usual possession play and finishing," said Jackson.

"Brando couldn't take part because of a bug which has been affecting him for a while and which we want out of his system."

Jackson will watch LDV Trophy opponents Morecambe in action at Halifax tonight.
