Former captain Peter Clarke was laughing his sides sore as Huddersfield Town went out of the FA Cup.

Not that the 34-year-old central defender wished David Wagner and the John Smith’s Stadium club any ill will, but he was enjoying helping Bury to their own third-round replay win over Bradford City in a penalty shoot-out.

It undoubtedly revived memories for Clarke, who was Town’s first scorer in the remarkable play-off promotion shoot-out against Sheffield United at Wembley in 2012.

Clarke described that victory as the proudest moment of his career and, while he didn’t take a spot-kick in last night’s 4-2 win at Valley Parade (Bury, like Town, also had a man sent off) he was beaming as goalkeeper Ian Lawlor made two saves before Jacob Mellis scored the decisive kick for the Shakers.

Bury will now entertain Town’s Championship rivals Hull City in the fourth round, when Clarke will hope to be back in the starting line-up after being on the bench against Phil Parkinson’s side last night.
