Chris Powell says Huddersfield Town’s first win of the season at Charlton Athletic will mean so much more if his side can follow up by picking up further points from the home games against Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest.

The upbeat boss was happy to relive Tuesday’s 2-1 triumph against his former employers in South London as he looked ahead to the Roses clash with Neil Lennon’s Lancashire side.

But Powell was quick to point out the need to make it the first of many as he eyes a climb up the Championship table with a new-look side.

“Getting that first win was a hurdle we had to overcome,” he said.

“There was a touch of fate that it was at Charlton, especially after last season (when Town lost 3-0).

“We had been close previously, but you can’t keep saying that. We needed a total and committed performance over 90 minutes.

“We got that, but it’s important now to build on it.

“It’s a relief but we only have one win, so let’s not get carried away or drop our levels.”

Town are 20th, three places and a point behind Bolton.

“They have been quite similar to ourselves,” added Powell.

“They have got themselves going a little bit now with a run of four unbeaten.

“Both of us know a win will make things look better.

“You look at Derby County, who have just beaten Preston North End and Reading.

“They are 10th and up and running, but had they not picked up those wins, they might have been in the bottom three.

“I want us to get back-to-back wins and I think we deserve to do that.

“But we always recognise how tough this league is.”

At Charlton, Powell handed starts to four of his five loan signings, Aston Villa keeper Jed Steer, AFC Bournemouth centre-back Elliott Ward, Wigan Athletic midfielder Emyr Huws and Middlesbrough winger Mustapha Carayol.

Nottingham Forest forward Jamie Paterson, who will be ineligible against his parent club on Thursday, was on the bench.

“There have been a number of changes to the squad, so we are trying to knit together a group in a short space of time,” said Powell.

“We are getting there, and staying at Bisham Abbey in between Cardiff and Charlton was a big help.

“It’s become a very good facility, and we were able to work on the training ground.

“We also took a trip into Windsor, had a stroll around the town, watched a few guys playing walking football and enjoyed a nice Italian meal in the shadow of the castle, and that was great for bonding.”

Powell will assess ankle injury victim Jonathan Hogg before the Bolton game.

He said striker James Vaughan (calf) remains “seven to 10 days” away from fitness.

Bolton are missing their skipper Darren Pratley, Dorian Dervite, who played under Powell at Charlton, Zach Clough, Max Clayton, Liam Trotter and David Wheater through injury.
