HEYWOOD Irish Centre will be aiming to claim their third trophy of the season as they take on Lindley WMC in the District FA’s Sunday Challenge Cup final tomorrow (3pm).

The clubs have both had impressive runs to the final at YMCA’s Laund Hill ground and they couldn’t be separated in a league clash in midweek.

Heywood have cruised through with wins over Wellington Westgate (10-2), Barr Street (13-2), Cricketers Arms (7-0) and Towngate (6-1).

Lindley had a couple of closer calls as they scored victories over Golcar Con (4-3), Rope Walk (11-0), Town Boys (3-2 after extra time) and Waterloo BC (6-3).

Heywood (having already taken the Rollinson Cup) became Division I champions of the Sunday League for the second year running after seeing off the challenge of bottom club Wellington Westgate.

An Adam Bell hat trick and a goal by Steve Perrin saw them safely home 4-1 – Alan Elvidge replied for Wellington.

The Irish’s victory gave them their second trophy of the season, with two more still to play for.

However, in a dress rehearsal for the cup final, they did relinquish their 100% league record when they met Lindley WMC in a midweek fixture.

They fielded a mixture of first and reserve-team players as they faced a WMC side who needed one point to be Division II champions, at Lindley Rec.

After only two minutes a mix-up in the Irish defence enabled Marlon Adams’ deflected shot to put Lindley 1-0 up.

The game flowed end to end without further goals until the 35th minute when Lindley conceded a penalty and John Paul Flynn duly dispatched it into the net.

Just before half-time Lindley were unfortunate not to go in the lead when Josh Smith’s angled shot hit the post and somehow Marlon Adams was unable to convert the follow-up.

There were no more goals to be had at either end, although the Irish never really tested Lindley’s keeper, while Heywood keeper Brendan Shanahan, who is normally in the reserves, had to make two or three important stops.

Both teams were satisfied with the 1-1 result, Lindley because it gave them the Division II title and the Irish had maintained their unbeaten record.

Lindley will also be pleased as they did not lose an inter-divisional game against Division I opponents – winning five and drawing one.

In Division II Heywoods’ second string went down to a 4-1 scoreline at Royds Hall against third-placed Rose and Crown, whose scorers were Marc Howland (2), Shaun Barron and David Hammer.

Sam McDermott replied.

A trio of officials will represent the Kirklees area at the final of the West Riding Premier Division Cup between Bay Athletic and Meltham Athletic at Brighouse Town’s ground (Monday, 11.00).

Waterloo’s Alan Berry is in the middle with his assistants being Adrian Jagger, from Lindley, and Brighouse’s Tahir Khan.

Another Huddersfield referee on cup final duty is Howard Young, who takes charge of the Division I Cup final between Hunsworth and Tyersal on Wednesday, May 20.
