Forget Newcastle United and Aston Villa, Huddersfield Town must now show they can produce the goods against Barnsley.
That’s the view of former Town striker Dale Tempest , now the public relations guru of Football League sponsors Skybet.
Tempest has been delighted by the start Town have made to their Championship campaign and can’t wait to get across to the John Smith’s Stadium to watch David Wagner’s side.
But he says the players cannot afford to take their foot off the pedal, especially with an eager Yorkshire rival coming up next.
“It’s been a brilliant first three matches of the season and congratulations to Dean Hoyle, David Wagner and all the staff and players,” said Tempest, who was top scorer in both his two seasons in blue and white stripes.
David Wagner talks about Michael Hefele:
“I said at the outset Town had the look of a competitive side and they certainly underlined that with their performances and results against Brentford and Newcastle.
“It sounds like Town rode their luck a bit against Aston Villa in the first half in midweek, but I think they deserved that bit of luck after the first two results.
“But now, if they are going to kick on and become serious contenders, performing in the top half of the table and maybe pushing for play-off places, they have to keep on producing.
“It’s no good beating the supposed big boys and then slipping up at home against teams that they need to be beating.”
Reference Barnsley in that last comment, who may be new to the division following promotion last season but who have put behind them an opening defeat at Ipswich and exit in the EFL Cup (to Northampton) by beating Derby County and QPR – two very decent scalps.
“I’m desperately trying to work out my diary so that I can make my first visit over to Town this season,” added Tempest.
“What I’ve seen and heard of the team so far is very encouraging, but I’m very keen to come and have a proper first-hand look at them myself.”
