Joe Skarz believes he can follow in the footsteps of fellow former Huddersfield Town player Lucas Akins by winning promotion from League II.

Striker Akins was Burton Albion’s 10-goal top scorer as the Brewers won the title this season.

Defender Skarz has signed a new three-year contract at Oxford United after joining them from Rotherham United in January.

Oxford, bossed by Michael Appleton, finished 13th this season.

But Skarz, like Akins a product of the Town academy, sees brighter times ahead.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and am really looking forward to next season,” he said.

“The board and the manager are very ambitious and have big plans for the club and I want to play a part in that.

“Everyone, from the players to the fans, has made me feel very welcome, and we ended the season so positively that I can’t wait to get back for pre-season and start playing again.”

Appleton said: “Joe is an excellent defender and a great pro to have around the club.

“He has won promotion from this league, and the one above, and his experience will be a massive plus for us next season.

“There was a lot of interest from other clubs, but it speaks volumes for Oxford United that he has seen what we are starting to build here and wants to be involved.”

Skarz, 25, made 81 Town appearances before moving to Bury in 2010.
