Former Huddersfield Town loan striker Benik Afobe has been called up to the England Under-21s squad to replace Saido Berahino for the European Championships in the Czech Republic.

West Brom striker Berahino, whose injury is unspecified, was forced to withdraw from Gareth Southgate's 23-strong party this morning just hours before they kick off their campaign against their Portugal counterparts.

But Afobe, who now plays for the Baggies' Black County rivals Wolves , comes into the attacking roster alongside Tottenham Hotspur sensation Harry Kane and new Liverpool signing Danny Ings.

The 22-year-old will miss the Portugal clash, but is in line to face Sweden on Sunday, June 21 and Wednesday, June 24.

"I’ve kept in contact with him in case something like this happened," said manager Southgate.

"He’s always been super positive about being involved and he’s excited by it.

"He’s had an excellent season with MK Dons and Wolves this season and he deserves the opportunity.

"He knows most of the group already from playing in other age groups so we’re looking forward to seeing him."

The Arsenal academy product scored for Wolves at the John Smith's Stadium back in February in a 4-1 defeat for Chris Powell's side in 2014/15 on his return to the club, having made 35 appearances for Town in 2010/11 during their march to the play-off final.

He netted eight times in total, including a brace in a 3-2 win at Brighton and Hove Albion as Town narrowly missed out on promotion to the second tier following the 3-0 play-off final defeat at Old Trafford against Peterborough United.
