Former Huddersfield Town midfielder Keith Southern has agreed to join League One new boys Fleetwood Town.

Southern was released at the end of the 2013/2014 campaign after a two-year spell at the John Smith's Stadium and heads back to the Lancashire coast, having moved to Town from Blackpool in 2012 for £330,000.

The veteran midfielder racked up 330 appearances at Bloomfield Road, after joining the club from Everton in 2002, before securing a further 41 during his time with Town.

Ambitious Fleetwood are currently preparing for life in the third tier of English football after promotion from League Two last year, as Antoni Sarcevic's goal in the play-off final against Burton Albion helped the Cod Army climb a sixth rung of the English football ladder in the past 10 seasons.

Southern, who becomes Fleetwood's second signing this summer after Danny Andrew from Macclesfield, told the club's official website: "The vision here is a real opportunity for me to run with a club who are going places.

"I've played against Graham Alexander and I know he is an  ambitious guy. He looks to the future and neither him or the club want to standstill.

"I'm looking forward to meeting the lads and helping this team win games."
