FORMER Huddersfield Town defender Efe Sodje has been named assistant manager of Macclesfield, another of his old clubs.

He will work with John Askey, who has been appointed manager of the Conference outfit for a second time.

Previous boss Steve King was sacked in April after failing to guide the former Football League side into the play-offs last season.

Ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler was among the candidates linked with the vacancy at Moss Rose.

But Askey, who achieved legendary status as a Macc player by scoring more than 150 goals, has been handed the role, despite losing four and winning only one of his five games as caretaker after King’s departure.

The 48-year-old had a five-month stint in charge of the Silkmen during the 2003-04 season, winning seven of his 27 matches.

Nigerian international Sodje, recently released by Bury, featured in Town’s League II play-off winning side that season and made 76 appearances in all between 2003 and 2005.

The 40-year-old was one of 16 players released by Bury last month, ending his five-year stay at Gigg Lane.

He recently played at the John Smith's Stadium as part of the Huddersfield Town legends v 200 kids event.

He has also had spells with Luton, Crewe, Yeovil, Southend and Gillingham.
