FORMER Huddersfield Town player Steve Jenkins is the new manager of Monmouth.

And chairman Lee Robson says it’s up to the non-league club to match the former Town and Wales star’s ambition rather than vice-versa!

It’s a first step into management for Jenkins, who made 294 Town appearances between November 1995, when he signed from Swansea, and February 2003, when he joined Cardiff.

But the 40-year-old has coached at Newport and been assistant manager to Andy Legg at Llanelli, helping them win the Welsh Premier League title in 2010 and the Welsh Cup in 2011.

Monmouth play one level below the Welsh Premier League, in the Welsh League First Division.

Rival clubs include Aberdare, Cwmbran, Haverfordwest and Ponterdawe and Ton Pentre.

Jenkins, born at Merthyr, 35 miles from Monmouth, and capped 16 times, also played for Birmingham (on loan from Town), Notts County, Peterborough and Swindon.

He cost Town £275,000 when signed by Brian Horton, and also played under Peter Jackson, Steve Bruce, Lou Macari and Mick Wadsworth.

Robson said: “I could do the usual flannel about being sure Steve will take us up a notch, but I think that’s self-evident. The challenge for us is to match his ambitions.

“We’ve got great people around the club who can and will step up to the plate.”

Jenkins’ former Town teammate Paul Reid is manager of Welsh Premier League club Afan Lido.

He guided the Port Talbot-based side to a 12th-placed finish last season.
