Former Huddersfield Town forward Karim Matmour is being linked with a return to Germany with 1860 Munich.

The 31-year-old was released by the club at the conclusion of the 2015/16 season after a six month stay at the John Smith’s Stadium and looks set to head back to the German football pyramid, having already represented Borussia Monchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Kaiserslautern.

Matmour managed one goal in 16 appearances for Town after signing on a free transfer in January.

Town decided not to offer the forward a new contract, and instead have added striker Elias Kachunga on loan from FC Ingolstadt and signed diminuitive no.10 Jack Payne from Southend.

David Wagner is also targeting 1860 Munich skipper Christopher Schindler to bolster his defensive options before the Championship season kicks off in August.

The 26-year-old is keen on the move, but a fee is still to be agreed, with his current club valuing the defender at €2m according to Munich-based journalist Armin Gibis.
