Former Huddersfield Town wideman Adam Hammill aims to build on a bright start to his second spell at Barnsley when the Reds host Port Vale in League I.

The 27-year-old, released by the John Smith’s Stadium club in September, scored a spectacular winner against York City at Oakwell on Tuesday to put Lee Johnson’s side into the area semi-finals.

Hammill, a popular player during his first spell at Barnsley between February 2009 and January 2011, has signed a short-term deal.

He left Town by mutual consent with 10 months remaining in his contract.

Town signed the Liverpool product and former England Under 21 player from Wolves in June 2013.

That followed a loan spell in which he made 16 appearances, scoring twice.

He played 49 times during the 2013-14 Championship campaign, when he notched five goals and was Town’s top assist maker.

But he fell out of favour last term, and was loaned to Rotherham United.

Hammill returned to Town in pre-season, admitting off-field issues had hampered him and saying he wanted to fight his way back into the team.

He featured in the first two matches of the campaign against Hull City and Notts County (Capital One Cup), both times from the bench.

That took his overall Town stats to 75 games (54 starts) and seven goals.
