Huddersfield Town remain in talks with former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi.

The 33-year-old, who is a free agent, has been training with the John Smith’s Stadium club.

Manager Chris Powell said discussions over a possible deal had started, but were then put on the back burner because of the consecutive away games at Cardiff City last Saturday and Charlton Athletic on Tuesday.

“Those games needed our full attention, and we stayed away between them,” he explained.

“But we are still talking and we will see if something comes of it.

Shola is a free agent, so we are not bound by any deadlines and have time on our side.”

Ameobi, who played for Nigeria in the 2014 World Cup after representing England at Under 21 level, had a spell with Premier League Crystal Palace last season.

He scored 79 goals in 219 starts and 178 substitute outings for Newcastle before leaving in 2014.

Ameobi, whose brother Sammy is on loan to Cardiff City from Newcastle, had a brief stint in Turkey before joining Palace, managed by former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, on a short-term deal.
