Jacob Butterfield already looks like a man who is ready for the Championship season and he’ll be aiming to underline that fact on familiar territory.

The talented midfield arrival from Middlesbrough scooped the Town Player of the Year award last season and has performed consistently well in pre-season so far.

The 25-year-old began his career at Barnsley as a 17-year-old, so the friendly at Oakwell should be ideal surroundings for a final run-out before the league opener at Hull next Saturday.

Butterfield has actually made more appearances for Barnsley than any of his other clubs, but he’s not the only man in Chris Powell’s squad making a return to the South Yorkshire venue.

Adam Hammill spent two seasons at Barnsley before moving to Wolves in 2011, while Martin Cranie was captain at Oakwell and played over 100 games in his three seasons in red.

“We have prepared in the proper way and I want the lads to build on what they produced against Deportivo on Wednesday night,” said Powell, who hopes to have striker Ishmael Miller back in action.

“I don’t get carried away with pre-season results, but it would be nice to build on the clean sheet and the play we produced at the John Smith’s and hopefully go into the new season on the back of a win.”

Barnsley manager Lee Johnson has a much-changed squad to select from for his first full season in charge.

He has made seven signings – including former Inverness striker Marley Watkin and Conor Wilkinson on loan from Bolton – while Butterfield and Co will be up against Conor Hourihane in midfield, the man who was Barnsley’s Player of the Year with 14 goals as they finished 11th in League One last season.

Barnsley have been delighted to retain Wales centre-back Lewin Nyatanga on a new two year deal.
