EX-TOWN player John Thorrington is celebrating after landing the Major League Soccer Player of the Week prize.

The 29-year-old US international is currently with Chicago Fire, and sealed Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Toronto FC in stoppage time.

Thorrington netted after a neat one-two with Justin Mapp, and his strike put Fire third in the Eastern Conference.

After struggling to make the Fire first team during his first three seasons at Chicago, Thorrington has been a regular this time around.

The goal was his fourth of the campaign and his form won him another US call, for the World Cup qualifier against Barbados last month.

A substitute in the 1-0 win in Bridgetown, Thorrington is back in action for Fire in Saturday’s clash with Real Salt Lake at Toyota Park, the club’s 20,000 capacity stadium in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview.

Thorrington, who was born in South Africa but raised in California, made the headlines last season when his goal against LA Galaxy ended David Beckham’s play-off hopes.

A former Manchester United junior who was signed from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2000, Thorrington made 74 Town appearances, 21 of them as a substitute, and scored eight goals.

He joined Grimsby in March 2004, but played only three times for the Mariners before heading back to the States.
