IT SPEAKS volumes about Frank Worthington that more than 40 years after his transfer between the two clubs, a clash between Huddersfield Town and Leicester still brings talk of the flamboyant former frontman.

Frank – now 64 was featured in the Leicester programme for the New Year’s Day Championship clash, with former Foxes teammate Alan Birchenall giving his views.

Having scored 48 times in 192 games for Town, who brought him through their youth system, Frank would have joined LIverpool for £150,000 in June 1972 had he not failed his medical. Leicester bought him for a knockdown £80,000 that August.

He went on to net 78 goals in 239 games, and win eight England caps, while at Filbert Street, which was just down the road from the current King Power Stadium, and Birchenall noted: “Frank, or should I say ‘Elvis’, is much loved by fans of both clubs.

“Prior to joining Leicester, Frank was set to sign for Liverpool, but there was a problem with his blood. To be honest, I’m amazed he had any! But Liverpool’s loss was Leicester’s gain.

“If Fernando Torres is worth £50m in today’s market, goodness knows how much Frank would fetch!

“Under (Leicester boss) Jimmy Bloomfield, Elvis was magnificent, but a law unto himself. Most of the time, you just left him to do what he wanted.

“These days players are out on the pitch well in advance of kick-off, but Frank would often report to the ground at 2.00, then disappear for half an hour!

“More often than not he’d be signing autographs in the car park or grabbing the numbers of some admiring females!

“I also remember times on the training ground when we would be getting a roasting while Frank would be at the other end, volleying in shots that one of the youth team players was setting up for him. The coach just left Frank to it!”

Two of Frank’s former Town teammates, Colin Dobson and Mick Barry, were present when Sheffield Wednesday visited the John Smith’s Stadium last Saturday.

Dobson, who played for both the Yorkshire clubs, is now scouting for Stoke while Barry, who later played for Carlisle, lives in the USA.
