A FEAST of football fun is guaranteed during the 19th staging of the Yorkshire Cup which begins tomorrow.

Leeds Road Playing Fields will host the annual junior football tournament throughout the weekend, boasting a total of 47 teams contesting 108 matches.

Unfortunately, due to lack of entries, the Under 11s and 14s have been dropped, but the main competition will feature teams from across the country in Under 12s, 13s and 15s categories, playing matches of 25 minutes each way.

The event is coordinated by Kirklees Council and Euro-Sportring and is boosted by the welcome return of Polish team Bielsko-Biala.

Event coordinator Peter Kenyon, of Euro-Sportring, said: “All visitors to this tournament are guaranteed three days of marvellous football activity.

“In the last 18 years we have played host to teams from most European countries as well as America, Canada, Japan, Mexico and South Africa.

“These young players have displayed different styles of play against teams from Ireland, Scotland and of course local and national teams.”

He added: “That is the beauty of this event – there will be contrasting styles of play to admire which have produced many different winners on the champions’ list.

“This year’s tournament takes place on the front pitches of the Leeds Road Sports Complex and we are looking forward to supporters coming down to enjoy three days of high quality competition.”

Despite the obvious lack of international teams this year, the event has received more entries nationally, particularly from the North East.

Action takes place from 9.30 to 6.00 tomorrow and Saturday, with Sunday hosting the finals and the mini-soccer tournament, for teams aged nine and 10 years.
