GERRY MURPHY has left Town after two decades of outstanding service.

The 65-year-old Dubliner has retired from his post as Director of Football Development and will be replaced at the head of the Academy by Graham Mitchell.

Murphy, who has just completed a successful testimonial year, has three times been a successful caretaker manager of the club and his ability to nurture young players was recognised in 2006 when he received the inaugural Contribution to Football Award from the Football League.

Murphy – who has twice defeated next weekend’s opponents Leeds United while in charge of the first team – said: "I am grateful for the support I have had from the board, players and everyone who has worked at the club during my time.

"I have really enjoyed myself, but as the saying goes, all good things come to an end. I would just like to say that I am proud to be part of such a great club and I look forward to giving my support in the future."

Murphy, who joined the youth set-up in 1988 having been with Rawthorpe and Bradley Rangers in local football, produced half the squad which won promotion through the play-offs under Peter Jackson in 2004, in addition to mentoring players like Andy Booth and Jon Stead.

"We are all immensely sad at the departure of Gerry after his long and fruitful association with the club," said chairman Ken Davy.

"His work at the Academy is legendary and he has played a major part in the club’s development.

"Speaking personally, I would like to pay tribute to the support and energy that he has given to the club during the last six years of my involvement; the way he magnificently stepped into the breach on three occasions as caretaker manager, where he helped the team to enjoy some real success.

"Everyone wishes him future success, health and happiness."

Chairman-elect Dean Hoyle said Murphy had left the Academy in a solid state for Mitchell and the management team under boss Lee Clark to drive forward.

"He leaves a legacy that will live on for many years," said Hoyle.

"Few people in the 100-year history of Town have made such an immense contribution and, needless to say, he will always be welcome at the club.

"Everybody wishes to thank him for his undying commitment and In the coming months we will be working to ensure that Gerry receives a fitting tribute from the club."
