DAVID MIRFIN is off the hook!

The teenage Town defender looked like having the dubious honour of having scored own goals in successive matches - until today.

Now, the Football League are to officially credit his `own goal' against Bristol City at Ashton Gate to the Robins' wingman Luke Wilkshire.

It seems the right and proper decision, because Mirfin could do nothing about the Australian's shot hitting him en route to goal.

Mirfin was simply sliding in to try and prevent a last-minute equaliser, and the ball ballooned off his shin and beat goalkeeper Ian Gray in his top lefthand corner.

Unfortunately, Mirfin will have to live with the headed own goal he scored in the previous match, a 2-0 defeat by Barnsley at the Galpharm.

News of his release from the Ashton Gate stigma comes after pressure from both Town and the City manager Brian Tinnion.

Officials at the League have reviewed the goal - which was credited to Mirfin on the day of the match by the Press Association representative - on video and decided it should go in the records as Wilkshire's.

He now has three goals for the season while Mirfin's account stands at one each - his own goal v Barnsley plus one proper one v Morecambe!
