Chris Powell hailed two-goal hero Emyr Huws’ key contribution in Huddersfield Town’s 4-1 Championship win over Bolton Wanderers and smiled: “He’s my kind of midfielder.”

The Wigan Athletic man is one of five loan players brought in by Powell with the backing of chairman Dean Hoyle, who says there is still cash available for permanent signings when the right deals are available.

Huws, having notched in the 2-1 victory at Charlton Athletic last Tuesday, went to the top of the club goal chart on three as Town climbed to 13th in the table as they prepare to host Nottingham Forest on Thursday.

“We had originally pencilled in the last half hour for Emyr in this game,” explained Powell.

“But he got that at Cardiff the Saturday before, then because of other factors, started at Charlton, but couldn’t continue.

“I thought he’d maybe play the first hour against Bolton, but he looked okay, wanted to carry on and lasted 76 minutes.”

Powell added: “Emyr is my sort of midfielder. He has good balance, an eye for a pass, wants the ball, wants to get in the box, doesn’t shirk his responsibilities and he has goals in him. I’ve kept my eye on him and knowing it hadn’t really worked out at Wigan, took the opportunity to sign him.

“We have obviously lost Jacob Butterfield as well as Conor Coady and Oscar Gobern.

“But Dean Whitehead has come to the fore, Emyr has arrived and it was good to have Jonathan Hogg back against Bolton (he went on as a substitute). I have also got Kyle Dempsey and Phil Billing and will go with them too.”

Hoyle said in his programme notes: “Derby County were desperate to secure Jacob (Butterfield) and they had to pay top dollar. Subsequently we’ve allowed Chris Powell to bring in loan players of his choice.

“I’ve already said money from Alex Smithies’ transfer (to QPR) would be reinvested in the squad.

“That money is still available, but we didn’t feel the players we could have brought in during the window would have added the right value to the team. We all know you have to spend wisely for the long term.”
