Facts

Huddersfield Town secured a highly-credible 0-0 draw with La Liga side Deportivo de La Coruna on Wednesday night.

Chris Powell's side started brightly and Nahki Wells and Kyle Dempsey both went close but, in an even affair, the Spanish side just shaded the contest in terms of clear-cut chances.

The likes of Luis Fernandez and Juan Dominguez were most culpable for missing good chances while the dangerous Miguel Cardoso had a goal chalked off for offside.

Town team (4-2-3-1): Smithies (Murphy, 46); Smith (Cranie, 68), Hudson (Lynch, 46), Wallace, Davidson (Boyle, 78); Whitehead (Hogg, 63), Butterfield (Hammill, 78); Scannell (Lolley, 63), Dempsey (Holmes, 88), Hiwula (Bunn, 63); Wells (Vaughan, 68).

Analysis

Town get a good workout - The way the Spanish side moved the ball quickly and stretched the play constantly was a challenge both for Powell's defence and midfield will have done this side the world of good.

They looked far more compact and resolute than the first-half defensive shambles at Rochdale and it told as they sealed a result which left both the supporters and the manager content.

Main man

Jason Davidson - The left-back was Town's standout player on the night, showing an impressive range of passing ability, a willingness to receive the ball and also a desire to get up and down the left flank.

Town's left-back position has been a problem one for some time but they look to have resolved that now on this evidence at least with Davidson, who brings a composure to a Town backline which were devoid of it at times last year.

Bigger picture

The season inches ever closer - Only a Saturday trip to Barnsley remains before an opening-day visit to Hull City and there will be plenty that Powell will have learned about his players in the last week.

The contrasting results mean his mood will have altered significantly, but also he has a better idea of the starting XI he will go with in the opening stages of the season and those who may have to push harder for a place.
