JORDAN RHODES has his sights set on 20 goals – but admits he’d stick on 19 if it meant Town could win promotion from League I this season.

The Galpharm strike ace is seeking a London one-two against Charlton Athletic at the Galpharm tomorrow after setting Lee Clark’s side on their way to last Saturday’s 2-0 triumph at Leyton Orient.

It was a first goal in seven games for the 20-year-old, and helped Town to a first win in five which breathed new life into their play-off challenge.

After midweek games involving some of their rivals for a top-six finish, Clark’s seventh-placed side are three points off Colchester United, the side directly above.

And they can cut the gap on fourth-placed Charlton to three points by beating Phil Parkinson’s side in another big home showdown.

"We’re well aware of the situation, and it’s amazing how quickly it can all change, but as the manager keeps saying, the only table that matters is the one on May 8, when everyone has played 46 games," said former Ipswich Town man Rhodes.

"There are nine to go, and our aim is to take as many points as we can and see where we end up. The only matches we can influence are the ones we’re playing in, and it’s pointless getting worked up about what’s going on elsewhere."

Rhodes, who now has 29 goals in a career which has included loan spells at Rochdale and Brentford, was delighted to get back on the scoresheet at Brisbane Road.

"I’ve had a bit of a barren spell, which happens to all players, but is still frustrating," added the Oldham-born player, who can become the first Town player to notch 20 in a season since Pawel Abbott got 27 in 2004-05.

"The chances had been there, but I’d been unable to put them away, so it was very satisfying to see that shot go in last Saturday.

"Getting to 20 goals would represent another milestone for me, and would be great, but the team is the most important thing, and the main concern tomorrow is that someone scores and we win the game."

Rhodes reckons Town can take inspiration from the way Orient were seen off, saying: "I thought we produced a thoroughly professional performance.

"It was an important win for us having lost the previous three in a row, and after a very good week on the training field, we were all pretty focused.

"We set about the game the right way and maintained our grip on it, and keeping a clean sheet was encouraging as well.

"It wasn’t the most beautiful of victories, but we’ve been saying for weeks now that you have to know how to grind out wins, and that’s what we did."

Rhodes still has clear memories of Town’s 2-1 defeat by Charlton at The Valley back in October and is keen to set the record straight tomorrow.

"Sam Sodje put them ahead in the first half, and while we equalised through a great Anthony Pilkington strike from a free-kick, they got back in front through Izale McLeod early in the second half," he recalled.

"We got done by two set-pieces, which is annoying for any manager and any player, and we have to be wary of their threat again.

"They are a good side with some good players, but we are too, and if we play the way we can, we certainly have the beating of them."
