HOW Town would love a repeat of 1958-59!
That was when they recorded the biggest of their seven wins in 27 away league games against Leyton Orient.
Stan Howard, Les Massie, Derek Hawksworth and Kevin McHale made the scoresheet, while Orient’s Phil McKnight scored an own goal as Bill Shankly’s side won 5-2 in the original Second Division (now Championship) before a 13,828 crowd.
Town’s most recent victory at Brisbane Road was the season before last, when Luke Beckett got the game’s only goal in front of 4,660.
The first away win in this fixture came in 1919-20, when Town won promotion to the top flight and the home side were known as Clapton Orient and played at Millfields Road, one of their four different grounds before they arrived at their current base in 1937.
Prolific centre-forward Sammy Taylor sealed a 1-0 triumph with the crowd officially recorded as 10,000.
Town’s other away wins over the East Londoners came in 1963-64 (3-2 in what is now the Championship), 1965-66 (2-0, Championship), 1982-83 (3-2, League I) and 1994-95 (2-0, League I).
Orient can boast 16 home league wins over Town, plus one in the FA Cup (2-0 in a fourth-round replay in 1981-82).
