Steve Thompson will become manager Mark Robins’ right-hand man in a new-look Huddersfield Town coaching structure.

The former Blackpool assistant boss is one of a number of fresh appointments ahead of the Championship campaign.

Allan Stewart has moved from Hull to become Town’s head of sports science.

Former Town player and academy coach Nick Colgan will be head of goalkeeping.

Dan Hughes will follow Colgan from the youth to first-team set-up as strength and conditioning coach.

And Stuart Heaviside becomes the academy’s lead sports scientist.

Steve Eyre and Ian Bennett have been tipped to become first-team coach and academy goalkeeping coach, but those positions have yet to be confirmed.

Thompson, 49, played as a midfielder for Bolton, Luton, Leicester, Burnley, Rotherham and Halifax.

He had nine years on the coaching staff at Blackpool before leaving in the wake of Paul Ince’s departure as manager in February.

A key man in the Tangerines’ rise from League I to the Premier, Thompson worked under a number of managers and had two spells as caretaker chief. He has been praised for his man-management as well as coaching skills.

Stewart spent seven years working in Manchester City’s academy set-up before joining Hull in 2012. He has also worked in lacrosse and rugby league.

Robins, whose players return on July 1, pledged to freshen things up after the departures of Steve Taylor, Darren Robinson and Paul Crichton.

“I am delighted our new coaching team is taking shape well in advance of pre-season.” he said. “As a group we have plenty of time to develop our working relationships and build rapport.

“A lot of work has been put into this process. I have personally met and talked to a lot of interesting and good people and the club is clearly attractive. I am really excited by what each individual will bring to the players and the coaching and support set-up. It is a fresh beginning.

“In line with the club’s ethos, I’m delighted I have been able to promote Nick, Dan and Stuart from within, which maintains our commitment to continuity and development of staff as well as players. And with the chairman’s support, I have been able to appoint an extra member of staff as my assistant.”
