Nahki Wells and Elias Kachunga, the two players competing to start up top for Huddersfield Town , each scored for the second match running as Rochdale were beaten 2-0 behind closed doors at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The visit of the League I side followed Sunday’s 4-1 win over League II Accrington Stanley at PPG Canalside and provided a useful first chance for David Wagner’s new signings to get a feel of the club’s home turf ahead of the visit of Liverpool on Wednesday July 20.

The boss gave an hour’s action to 11 players then changed his entire team for the final 30 minutes in a good-tempo test against Keith Hill’s side. who finished 10th in their division last season.

Kachunga, who again caught the eye with his industrious approach, opened the scoring on 20 minutes, showing good control and a neat finish after latching onto Rajiv van La Parra’s flicked header from keeper Joel Coleman’s kick out.

The busy German was thwarted by a good save soon after as he hooked goalwards from a Tommy Smith cross, then forced the visiting keeper to block with his legs before coming close with a back heel across the face of goal.

In the main, Rochdale’s threat came from set-pieces, although powerful former Crystal Palace frontman Calvin Andrew brought a smart save from Coleman with a close-range header before Luke Coddington took over between he posts.

The side on show for the last half hour also featured new Slovenian centre-back Jon Gorenc Stankovic, who played alongside Michael Hefele (Mark Hudson missed out after taking a bang on the knee against Accrington).

Wells’ 73rd-minute clincher came after the Bermudian played a neat one-two with Philip Billing then tucked the ball home, while on-loan Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy was thwarted in a one-on-one.

Wagner handed another outing to 16-year-old England junior international Jordan Williams, this time at right-back (he played the final 15 minutes of last week’s 1-0 win at Guiseley as a replacement for midfielder Ivan Paurevic).
