ACADEMY boss Mark Lillis hailed an “unbelievable result” as Town reached the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup with a battling 3-2 extra-time victory at Stoke.
Duane Holmes fired Town in front in first-half stoppage time at the Britannia Stadium, but James Alabi’s late penalty levelled things up.
But the young Potters were left reeling by two Town goals in the first period of extra time, with Paul Mullins converting a Jake Charles cross and William Boyle bundling home.
The home side pulled one back through Peter Makrillos, but Town held out and will now go to Nottingham Forest.
“I am massively proud of the players, the staff and and the fans who followed us here,” said Lillis. “It is an unbelievable result and we showed a lot of character.
“We rode our luck at the end, but we deserved to go through. A year ago we would have lost that game, but we have got character and belief and the lads played for the shirt.”
