Chris Powell says he is mindful that the loan transfer window closes at the end this month as he gets latest signing Diego Poyet up to speed on the training ground.

West Ham midfielder Poyet, to whom Powell gave a senior debut last season when he was boss of Charlton Athletic, became the Town manager’s second signing after Grant Holt when he was recruited from Upton Park last Friday.

And the John Smith’s Stadium gaffer has hinted there could be more as he looks ahead to a seven-game schedule before the January transfer window opens.

“We have to make sure we have options going into a busy period before the squad can be rejigged in the New Year,” said Powell, whose side are next in Championship action at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday week (12.15).

“We have until the end of the month to make any loan signings and, as ever, we are keeping tabs on who is out there.”

Poyet, the 19-year-old son of Sunderland manager Gus, was an unused substitute at Fulham last Saturday.

“Diego arrived at the team hotel only at 6.30 on Friday evening,” explained Powell.

“He hadn’t been involved in any of our preparations.

“I would love to have involved him from the bench, but the game didn’t pan out that way.”

Poyet’s loan runs through to December 6 (Holt’s has been extended to December 28).

A close-season signing by West Ham, he has made three appearances after playing 20 times for Charlton.

“Diego protects the ball and is a good user of it,” said Powell.

“He is forward thinking as well as defensively aware and will bring composure and calmness.

“The international break means he can bed himself in and we can see exactly where he is fitness wise.”
