Chris Powell remains keen to add to his Huddersfield Town squad – but accepting of the financial limits at the club.

This time last year, Town splashed out a club-record £1.3m for Nahki Wells and £350,000 for Joe Lolley.

After a week in which rumours about Benik Afobe and Connor Sammon came – and went – Powell remains calm.

“It’s no secret I want a few players, especially a striker,” he said.

“But they have to be the right players in the right positions at the right price.

“The club spent big at this time last year, but that won’t be happening again.”

Former Town loan player Afobe, impressive on loan to League I MK Dons in the first half of this season, has joined Wolves from Arsenal.

And Derby County’s Republic of Ireland international Sammon has swapped his loan at Ipswich Town for one at Rotherham United.

“We have seen Benik go for £2m,” continued Powell.

“He’s a talented player and one I like, but as I’ve said, for a lot of clubs, including ourselves, paying that kind if fee is a tall order.

“We will cut our cloth accordingly, and do what is right for the club financially.

“We certainly won’t rush through a signing for the sake of it.

“There are deals to be done out there, and we are working hard to make them.

“I have constant discussions with (chairman) Dean Hoyle, (chief executive) Nigel Clibbens and (football operations director) Ross Wilson.

“And Dean has been nothing but first class since I have been here.

“I have only brought in a couple of loan players (Grant Holt from Wigan and Diego Poyet from West Ham United), but when I wanted to do it, I was given the ability to do it.

“We know we need some players, and Dean has given me the ability to do it if I can.”

Sammon will join up with ex-Town man Danny Ward and loaned-out Adam Hammill at Rotherham.

Jon Stead is with Bradford City for the remainder of the season, and looking forward to an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Chelsea next Saturday.

And Martin Paterson’s proposed move to new Major League Soccer club Orlando City is ongoing.

“Some players have left, and while I could have kept them here to provide competition and cover, which you do need, at the stage they are at in their careers, they need regular football.

“But you always need competition, and you do worry about injuries and suspensions.”
