David Wagner reflected on a "pretty good day for Huddersfield Town" after his side stunned Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Substitute Jack Payne's late goal earned a second 2-1 win in two Championship games for Town after Nahki Wells' opener had been cancelled out by Dwight Gayle.

Wagner handed Wells, a reported target of a string of Championship rivals, a first outing of the season following a knee injury at the expense of Payne.

He also included the Bermudian's fellow striker Elias Kachunga and explained: "Our system was different to other games we played before.

"We wanted to create a stable, compact, deeper block, and we aimed to score with our transition game, and we managed to do it twice.

"The aim was to make space very tight and put a short distance between the players and especially in the first half it worked well.

"To win at a place like Newcastle you need a little bit of luck and perhaps we had this in the second half, but it was an oustanding performance overall."

Town had more than 3,000 fans in a 52,079 crowd and the boss added: "It was a great moment for the players to be able to celebrate with our great fans. This was a pretty good day for Huddersfield Town."
