LEE CLARK began the final countdown to Saturday’s big League I opener at home to Bury and revealed: “I can’t wait.”

Town’s boss, fresh from signing his new rolling contract, watched his new-look squad complete their pre-season programme with a 3-1 win at League II Rotherham on Saturday.

Donal McDermott, Lee Novak and Jordan Rhodes netted in the come-from-behind victory in front of 1,012, including 368 Town fans, at the sun-bathed Don Valley Stadium.

Clark was concerned about aspects of Town’s performance before the break, but pleased with the way they responded to his half-time pep talk to make it six wins from as many senior friendlies.

Now he has five days, and a private practice match at Doncaster tomorrow, to fine tune his team for the showdown with the promoted Shakers, who romped in 8-1 at non-league Prestatyn.

And Clark, who is being strongly linked with Bournemouth midfielder Anton Robinson is desperate to hit the ground running, saying: “I think we’re all eager to get going.

“Pre-season is an important time, and we’ve put in a lot of hard work and had plenty of games, but you can’t beat the real thing. Whatever happens in the friendlies, the result that matters is against Bury.”
