Mark Robins promised Huddersfield Town will improve quickly as he assesses selection options for Tuesday night’s trip to Sheffield United.

The boss admitted he had “food for thought” after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Scunthorpe at Glanford Park, the club’s first reversal of pre-season, and he’s hoping to be able to recall top striker James Vaughan at Bramall Lane.

Vaughan was pulled out of the reckoning against Scunthorpe – who won with a goal from Paddy Madden on 59 minutes – on the morning of the match.

Robins explained: “He presented with a stiff calf on Friday afternoon and we decided not to take the chance with him, because there is no point testing it.

“We are two weeks away from the start of the season and he has done some hard work.

He’s had a weekend of rest (with treatment on Sunday) and we will see where we are with a view to Tuesday.

“We have three games left plus the other games arranged around those. The people that need minutes will play in those games and get the relevant time on the pitch.”

On Saturday’s display, Robins said: “Performance-wise it was a bit disjointed.

“We passed it ok at times, but when we got into the final third we had to try and break them down and they were resolute.

“They had nine men behind the ball, leaving their ‘out ball’ as one long one over the top for a willing runner to chase. That proved our undoing in the end because their goal came from a bit of decent play down their right side; they played it in and slid it across for Paddy Madden, who made a good run.

“We will certainly be better than that in two weeks’ time. Although I wanted to win, from my perspective it was about getting the players more minutes on the pitch.”
