HUDDERSFIELD Town will set up camp in Spain as part of their pre-season training schedule.

Manager Mark Robins checked out facilities during a recent scouting mission, and will lead his squad on the five-day trip.

They will return for five friendlies, starting at Chesterfield on Saturday, July 13, with trips to York (Tuesday 16) and Rotherham (Saturday 20) before the home date with Real Betis (Wednesday 24) and visit to Oldham (Saturday 27).

“I’m a big believer in the value of taking players away for an intensive training camp,” said Robins, who is looking forward to his squad reporting back on Thursday, June 27.

“We will have new faces on board by then, and they will have a chance to settle into the group and get to know the existing players.

“We’ll be training in the sunshine, hopefully, but it certainly won’t be a holiday. There’s a lot of work ahead, but we’ll make it as enjoyable as we can.

“The lads have all been following tailored training plans, so should come back in decent shape, and pre-season is all about being ready for the first competitive game and a long, hard season.

“Everybody starts with a clean slate and we’ll be keeping a very close eye on how each one responds to what is asked of them.

“It’s an enjoyable time, but then I enjoy every part of the season, and after a spell away from the usual routine, it will be good to get down to business.”

Robins says the Spanish trip will also ease the pressure as work is completed at the Canalside training complex .

“Every time I call in, I notice a difference, and it’s going to be a great place to be based going forward.

“It’s a case of putting the finishing touches to everything, and those extra five days will help ensure the new pitches are in tip-top condition.”

Town – who have distanced themselves from a link with Bayern Munich winger Dale Jennings – will discover their Capital One Cup first-round opponents at 9.30 this morning.

Town are seeded and will face one of 18 unseeded Northern region clubs.
