Mark Robins may look to blood some of Huddersfield Town’s young guns before the end of the season – but only if the circumstances are right.

The boss is deep into preparations for Saturday’s visit of Bolton to the John Smith’s Stadium, when he’s hopeful defender Joel Lynch and leading scorer James Vaughan will be fit for selection.

Town are also at home next Tuesday, when Ipswich head North, so it’s a four-day spell in which Robins is keen to ensure his side move at least a couple of places up a congested mid-table in the Championship.

Young players like Tommy Smith, Murray Wallace, Duane Holmes and Harry Bunn are already featuring on the teamsheet and Robins is well aware of the talent waiting in the wings from the clubs successful league-winning development teams at Under 18 and Under 21 level.

He watched the Under 21s – including over-age players Lynch, goalkeeper Ian Bennett and Calum Woods – lose their first home game of the season 4-2 to Birmingham on Monday, when Matt Crooks and Paul Mullin were on the scoresheet.

“This club is all about making sure pathways exist for young players to grab the opportunities that come their way, but you have to be careful and make sure it’s done in the right way and at the right time,” said Robins.

“We are always looking for hungry people who really want it and then we can make sure the opportunities are there for them to be the best they can possibly be.

“I am still looking at them and trying to get one or two in, to blood one or two before the end of the season – but only if they deserve it.

“It’s fantastic the development sides have won their leagues and we do place demands on them – and ask them to place demands on themselves – to be ready as soon as possible to be able to step up and do a job.

“One or two of them started really brightly in the Under 21s against Birmingham, but then they fell below the standards they had set for themselves.

“So you have to move things forward in the right way with regard to stepping up to the first team.”
