FOOTBALL League pundit Peter Beagrie says a run in the Capital One Cup could spark a promotion charge for Mark Robins and Huddersfield Town next season.

The draw for the Capital One Cup saw Town drawn against last season’s losing finalists Bradford and Robins does not need to look far to see the impact a cup run can have on a club’s league’s form.

Bradford knocked out Premier League Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa, before going on to clinch promotion to League I via the play-offs – the only setback being the 5-0 defeat in the final at the hands of Swansea.

“People talk about a cup run distracting players from their day-in-day-out job in the Football League but I disagree – look at what Bradford achieved last season,” said Beagrie, who scored 20 goals in 132 appearances for the Bantams.

Mark Robins has a huge job in front of him at Huddersfield, but I think the feel-good factor around the club will return and intensify as the club progresses through the competition – just look at what Bradford achieved.

“It will be a tough one against Bradford, only if you have played in this fixture do you realise how volatile this game is.

“The close proximity of Huddersfield and Bradford makes it special to the fans – it’s not a game for any shrinking violets.”
