Steve Thompson appears to be on his way out of Huddersfield Town to join Leeds United.

The 50-year-old joint first-team coach is wanted by Elland Road boss Neil Redfearn as No2 at Town’s Championship rivals.

Thompson was given permission to leave last week, after being targeted a month ago, when Town agreed to waive compensation for the man who was appointed at PPG Canalside in June to work alongside then manager Mark Robins.

New Town boss Chris Powell brought in his own assistant, Alex Dyer, when he was appointed in September and Thompson has been working alongside Steve Eyre since then.

Thompson was a teammate of Redfearn’s at Bolton Wanderers in their playing days. Leeds are at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and Thompson could well be in the dug-out for them at the City Ground.

It’s believed Thompson’s terms at Leeds would run until the end of the season with the option of another year – exactly in line with the deal which Redfearn agreed.
