Huddersfield Town defender Paul Dixon is heading back to Dundee United.

The 28-year-old left-back – contracted until the end of the season – requested an early exit from Town and has been in negotiations for a return to Scotland .

It appears he is being released by Town boss Chris Powell and his contract will be terminated by mutual consent so that he can sign back at Tannadice.

The Scotland international has made 92 appearances for Town and is said to be being offered a two-and-a-half year deal at United, from where he joined Town in 2012.

United have been looking for a new left-back since Andrew Robertson was sold to Hull City in the summer.

They last week allowed right-back Keith Watson to leave Tannadice on loan to Hibernian.

Town have so far parted company with Jon Stead, Danny Ward, Adam Hammill (loan), Lee Peltier and Martin Paterson in the window and Dixon now joins them.

On the left-back's departure, Powell said: “Paul is an experienced professional and wants to play regularly, but the form of Jack Robinson has kept him out of our side. He is still out of contract in the summer.

“There has been interest from another club in recent days. Today Paul came to me and expressed a strong desire to be released, reluctantly at this stage of the season, and return to Scotland as soon as possible.

“He did not want to wait until the summer – and we didn’t want to stand in his way. Paul was a top professional - a dedicated players and he leaves the club with our best wishes.

“His departure gives us some more leeway to refresh the squad, and we will look to strengthen in this area in the emergency loan window.”
