Huddersfield Town Under 21s will face Derby County, Doncaster Rovers, Mansfield Town and Rotherham United in the group stages of the new-look Final Third Development League Cup.
It’s a first foray into the competition for Town, who are in their third season of Professional Development League II football.
Frankie Bunn’s charges have played one match so far this term, beating Bristol City 4-1 at PPG Canalside.
They are next in action at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, September 6 (11.00).
The details of the four cup fixtures are yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile Town have added Irish 16-year-old Same Warde to their academy ranks.
The midfielder comes from Limerick and has been playing for Mungret Regional.
He will work under Lead Professional Development Coach Tony Carss, who said: “We’re delighted to have received full clearance for Sam to play for us after he agreed to join the club in the summer.
“He is another exciting player identified through our scouting network.
“He is already very good technically in terms of receiving and passing, he has good awareness and always wants the ball.
“He’s also a good athlete with scope for further development.
“We’ve already been working with Sam during pre-season and we’re excited about his potential.
“However, as with all young players, it will come down to how hard he works on the training pitch every day.”
Town Under 18s face Charlton Athletic at PPG Canalside on Saturday (11.00).
It’s their second game of the season following a 4-4 draw at Crystal Palace.
