Nathan Byrne is the latest name linked to Huddersfield Town, with Saturday’s Championship visitors Queens Park Rangers also reported to be chasing the Swindon Town winger.

Given the fast-looming closure of the latest transfer window (at 6.00pm on Tuesday, September 1), the near £2m sale of goalkeeper Alex Smithies to QPR and Derby County’s interest in Town’s star midfielder Jacob Butterfield, it’s no surprise there is plenty of speculation surrounding the John Smith’s Stadium club.

As well as Tottenham Hotspur product Byrne, who scored an opening-day hat trick against Bradford City earlier this month, Town have been linked with Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane, Gillingham’s Bradley Dack, Shrewsbury Town’s Ryan Woods and Liverpool teenager Ryan Kent – and that’s just when it comes to midfielders.

While sources have confirmed they have all been watched, that doesn’t necessarily translate into firm interest.

Often agents are keen to create a clamour around their clients, and therefore leak ‘information’ that certain teams are keen.

And sometimes a selling club, having decided they will cash in on an asset, understandably try to engineer an auction situation in order to get the highest price they can.

These days, most clubs have contingency target lists for the very situation Town could find themselves in regarding Butterfield, already the subject of three bids from Derby.

The former Middlesbrough man was himself among one such collection of names when Town moved to replace Adam Clayton as he headed to Teesside a year ago.

It’s fair to say that as well as looking at the goalkeeping situation, given the lack of experienced cover for Joe Murphy, manager Chris Powell will be eager to reinforce his midfield should Butterfield depart.

Kyle Dempsey, signed from Carlisle United for £300,000 in July, is probably the closest player he has to last season’s Player of the Year in terms of style.

But like fellow new arrival Jordy Hiwula, while the Cumbrian teenager could turn out to be a diamond, he has yet to be polished.
