No-one who was there will ever forget Town’s last match at Leeds Road.

The new stadium was already taking shape at the foot of Kilner Bank when Town ran out against Blackpool on April 30, 1994.

It was the penultimate match of their first season under manager Neil Warnock in the Second Division (now League I), but more importantly it was the end of a glorious era for the Leeds Road club and an historic occasion for Huddersfield itself.

Their famous old ground had staged a visit by the Queen and an England international, but for those who loved the team in blue and white stripes, Leeds Road was quite simply the place everyone called home.

The FA Cup had been brought back there in 1922, following Town’s 1-0 win in the final against Preston at Stamford Bridge, and then the club celebrated their famous hat trick of English League title triumphs at the venue when, quite possibly, they were the best club side on the planet.

Saying farewell to the old place was emotional for many people, because they knew they’d never again be able to cheer from the Cowshed, stand with their sons and grandsons on the East Terrace or shield their wives and daughters from the driving rain on the open end.

You saw the same people, match after match, in exactly the same places in the ground and when Town were doing well – or there was a perceived injustice to the team – then the atmosphere was electric.

It was like that on the final day. Old players were paraded beforehand to great receptions, goals from Simon Baldry and Phil Starbuck ensured a victorious send-off for the team and then fans gathered on the touchlines minutes before the end of the game for a marvellous invasion of the pitch.

It was just one massive celebration, but also people lingered for hours afterwards on the terraces, immersed in their memories and sad that “home” would soon be gone.
