HUDDERSFIELD Town have been spared an extra early-season run-out.

Lee Clark’s side were yesterday one of 16 clubs given a bye to the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

It means there will be nomidweek fixture for Town between their big home clashes with Charlton Athletic on Saturday, August 28, and Bournemouth the week after.

That’s valuable time for Clark’s new-look squad, who will have played six matches before the scheduled first round.

Town beat Rotherham United at the first-round stage last season before going out to Chesterfield on penalties in the second round.

The other clubs given byes this year in the Northern Section are Bradford, Burton, Bury, Carlisle, Crewe, Peterborough and Stockport.

The draw for those clubs taking part in the first round will be made on Sky’s Soccer AM programme on Saturday, August 14.

Meanwhile, Scottish Premier League club Aberdeen have decided against signing former Town left-back Robbie Williams.

The 25-year-old has been on trial at Pittodrie and it appeared manager Mark McGhee was ready to offer him terms, but that now seems highly unlikely. They are instead being linked with Charlton defender Grant Basey.
