NICK COLGAN hailed Ian Bennett as his fellow Town goalkeeper marked his 500th match by keeping a clean sheet.

The former Peterborough, Birmingham and Sheffield United stopper, 39, reached the milestone in Saturday’s goalless League I draw with Oldham at the Galpharm.

Colgan was among the players who signed a Town goalkeeper’s shirt carrying the number 500 which was presented to Bennett afterwards.

“In all the games I’ve been involved in at the club, Benno has been outstanding,” said Colgan, brought back for a second spell at Town after Alex Smithies picked up a knee injury.

“He is a talented player and an excellent professional who looks after himself well and more than warrants his place in the side.”

Colgan also had praise for Smithies, saying: “He’s a hell of a goalkeeper, and while I know he’s a bit frustrated at the moment because of the injury, he’ll be back.”

On-loan Arsenal striker Benik Afobe marked his 18th birthday on Saturday with an appearance from the bench in the Pennine derby.
